A New Class of Branched Single Chain Surfactant for Enhanced Oil Recovery was Reported
On March 20th, 2019; Swansea University, A new green surfactant for efficient enhanced oil recovery (EOR) has been developed in Swansea University. This surfactant was examined by a research team led by Dr. Shirin Alexander and Professor Andrew r. Barron at ESRI. It is shown to improve the oil recovery by 72% in both high and low brine solutions. Remarkable result foe only a single chain surfactant flooding, compared to 45% recovery in the presence of other surfactants alone. Fabrication of a glass micro model and testing of these materials were carried out by PhD student Sajad Kiani. Dr. Alexander said that it is a revelation that a single chain surfactant alone, without addition of any nanoparticle, polymer can achieve large recovery of oil. The high effectiveness of this surfactant is because its ability in reducing the surface and interfacial tension of water/oil remarkably compared to other surfactants.
Increasing per capita consumption of oil is one of the major driving factors for the global surfactant EOR market.
