Global Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Market is valued at USD 311.1 Million in 2019 and expected to reach USD 416.9 Million by 2026 with a CAGR of 4.27% over the forecast period.""
Increasing prevalence of cases of cardiopulmonary disease and respiratory failure is driving the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation market
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), also called as extracorporeal life support (ECLS), is an extracorporeal technique of providing continued cardiac and respiratory support to patients whose heart and lungs are incapable to provide require amount of gas exchange to sustain life. The technology is derived from cardiopulmonary bypass. ECMO’s working concept is to temporarily drawing blood from body to enable artificial oxygenation of red blood cells and removal of carbon dioxide. It is mainly used in post-cardiopulmonary bypass or in treatment of patient with profound heart and lung failure. Recently, it is being used in treatment of COVID-19 patients where artificial ventilation is not sufficient to maintain blood oxygenation level.
Global Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Market is segmented on the basis of modality, application, and region & country level. Based on modality, global extracorporeal membrane oxygenation market is classified as Venoarterial (VA), Venovenous (VV) and Arteriovenous (AV). Based upon application, global extracorporeal membrane oxygenation market is classified into respiratory, cardiac and extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR)
The regions covered in this extracorporeal membrane oxygenation market report are North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Rest of the World. On the basis of country level, market of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is sub divided into U.S., Mexico, Canada, U.K., France, Germany, Italy, China, Japan, India, South East Asia, GCC, Africa, etc.
Some major key players for global extracorporeal membrane oxygenation market are,
Major factor driving the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation market is growing cases of cardiopulmonary disease and respiratory failure. For instance; cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are number one cause of death worldwide according to World Health Organization (WHO) and almost 17.9 million people died from CVDs in 2016 which was 31% of all global deaths. The prevalence of CVDs also increases the demand of ECMO as it helps in treatment of this disease. As per European Respiratory Society; approximately 65 million people suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and 3 million die each year. The prevalence of COPD also helps in increasing business of ECMO. At present, ECMO has become more dependable on the advancement in equipment and increased experience of professionals such as application of it as bridge to transplant, both for cardiac & lung and support for lung resections in unstable patients. According to annual international ELSO registry report, more than 65,171 patients were treated with extracorporeal life support (ECLS) form which 53% are new born, 25% were pediatric and 23% were adults. It shows the increasing use of ECMO in respiratory problem cases.
Additionally, many government organizations are implementing policies to spread awareness about ECMO across the globe which is also fostering the market growth. Furthermore, present ECMO machines are small in size which increases their portability application. However, complications in using ECMO machines such as infections, technical failure, bleeding, and costly treatment may hamper the market growth.
North America is dominating the global ECMO market with highest market share due to presence of major players, investment in research & development and prevalence of diseases in this region. For instance; from 2014 to 2015, heart disease costs about USD 219 billion in USA, which also affects the ECMO market, as many patients are able to bear the high cost of treatment through ECMO. According to a registry run by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO); the number of U.S. hospitals providing ECMO has more than doubled from 108 in 2008 to 264 in 2019.
Europe is the second largest market of ECMO due to high purchasing power, developed healthcare infrastructure and increasing awareness regarding the applicability of ECMO in this region. In Europe, according to GOLD, the prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) ranges from 3% in Netherlands to 26.1% in Austria as well as 12% in Denmark, because of which there is increasing demand on ECMO devices.
The Asia Pacific ECMO market is expected to have highest growth rate due to increasing healthcare expenditure by government, economic development of high population countries such as China & India and increasing urban lifestyle in this region. For instance; the in-hospital survival rate of ECMO-treated patients with acute respiratory failure was about 46% from 2014 to 2015 in Korea, which shows the prevalent use of ECMO in South Korea and other regions such as Japan and China.
