Global Cellulosic Ethanol Market is valued at USD 962.80 Million in 2022 and expected to reach USD 8969.31 Million by 2029 with a CAGR of 37.55% over the forecast period.
Global Cellulosic Ethanol Market: Global Size, Trends, Competitive, Historical & Forecast Analysis, 2022-2029- Rising environmental concern, increasing demand for clean renewable fuel and supportive government initiatives are contributing to the growth of Global Cellulosic Ethanol Market.
Cellulosic ethanol is a type of biofuel made from lignocellulose, a structural material made up mostly of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin that makes up a large portion of the mass of plants. Cellulosic ethanol is ethanol (ethyl alcohol)produced from cellulose (a plant's stringy fibre) rather than the seeds or fruit of the plant. Grass, wood, algae, and other plants can all be used to make it. It is frequently discussed as a biofuel. Because the carbon dioxide absorbed by plants during growth offsets some of the carbon dioxide emitted when ethanol created from them is consumed, cellulosic ethanol fuel has the potential to have a lesser carbon footprint than fossil fuels.
The potential for cellulosic ethanol to replace ethanol derived from corn or sugarcane has sparked interest. These plants are also used to make food, diverting them for ethanol production could raise food prices; cellulose-based sources, on the other hand, do not compete with food because humans cannot eat the fibrous sections of plants. Another possible benefit is the variety and diversity of cellulose supplies; grasses, trees, and algae may be found in practically any environment on the planet. Even municipal solid waste materials such as paper might theoretically be converted to ethanol.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the careful steps taken by governments of different nations have led to the temporary suspension of production and distribution of cellulosic ethanol and it has affected the market growth. However, increasing usage of renewable sources to avoid global environmental hazard as well as for global sustainability can increase demand for cellulosic ethanol in upcoming period.
Major players in the global cellulosic ethanol market are -
Global cellulosic ethanol market is segmented on the basis of feedstock, application and regional & country. On the basis of feedstock, the market is segmented into energy crops, agriculture residues, municipal solid waste, forest residues and others. On the basis of application, the market is segmented into gasoline and detergent.
The increasing concern regarding food security & environmental security and rising demand for renewable clean fuel are some of the major factors driving the growth of global cellulosic ethanol market. The environmental effects of cellulosic ethanol include reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. According to the Renewable Fuel Association; in 2018, the use of ethanol in gasoline reduced CO2-equivalent greenhouse gas emissions by 55.1 million metric tons from the transportation sector. This is the same as taking 11.7 million cars off the road for a year or reducing the annual emissions from 13 coal-fired power plants.
Production of ethanol is increasing worldwide owing to its benefits. In addition, rising demand for renewable clean fuel is also supplementing the market growth. As per the Renewable Fuels Association; in terms of production, around 109 billion liters (or 86 million tons) of ethanol were globally produced in 2018, most of which was made by US (56%), followed by Brazil (28%), EU (5%), and China (4%).
However, cellulose ethanol absorbs water and is also a corrosive substance and it also requires high cost for production which may restrain the market growth. In spite of that, massive investments by research institutes and large corporate houses can offer more opportunities for the further growth of the global cellulosic ethanol market.
North America is expected to dominate the global cellulosic ethanol market owing to the increased demand for cellulosic ethanol due to its environmental benefits and growing demand for clean biofuel and easy availability of feedstock in this region. According to the Renewable Fuel Association; US is the world's top ethanol producer, with over 15.7 billion gallons produced in 2019. The United States and Brazil manufacture 84 percent of all ethanol in the globe. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, to oxygenate the fuel and prevent air pollutants, more than 98 % of gasoline in the United States contains ethanol, typically E10.
Europe is projected to capture the second largest revenue share in the global cellulosic ethanol market due to the growing environmental concern, environmental benefits of biofuels and the commercialization of cellulosic biofuels along with government initiatives support biofuels. Production of cellulosic ethanol in Europe is increasing due to their various benefits. According to the Journal of E4tech, the total EU cellulosic ethanol production capacity rises from 31 million liters in 2017 (At one main commercial scale plant). The European Commission has proposed a 3.6% sub-target for all advanced biofuels, including lignocellulosic ethanol, in road and rail transport energy in 2030.
September 4th 2020; A German bioenergy company is preparing to produce corn ethanol and renewable natural gas at the site of a failed cellulosic ethanol plants in Nevada, Iowa. Verbio Vereinigte BioEnergie AG is building an anaerobic digester on the site that will annually convert up to 100,000 tons of corn stover a crop leftover consisting of everything but the kernel into a renewable fuel that can be fed into the nation’s natural gas pipeline system. Verbio hopes to begin production by fall of 2021. The biogas, known as RNG, is more expensive to produce than conventional natural gas, but producers can turn a profit by selling credits to refineries and fuel suppliers in California, where a state low-carbon fuel standard requires annual reductions in the carbon intensity of transportation fuels.
