Worldwide Borosilicate Glass Market has been assessed on the basis of various market-based aspects. In this report, 2020 has been taken as the base year. Further, the forecast period of 2022-2029 has been considered for the overall market analysis.

Scope:

Borosilicate glass is a type of glass that contains silica and boron trioxide as its main ingredients. It's known for being long-lasting and heat resistant. Unlike many other types of glass, it does not break when exposed to drastic temperature changes, making it the material of choice for a wide variety of applications, from cookware to laboratory use. Such glass is less thermally stressed and can withstand temperature differentials of up to 165°C without fracturing. It is widely used to make reagent bottles and flasks, as well as lighting, electronics, and cookware. Borosilicate glass was invented by German glassmaker Otto Schott in Jena in the late 1900s. The average composition is 80 percent silica, about 13% boric oxide, 4% sodium oxide, and 2 to 3% aluminum oxide. Borosilicate glass is also free of lead and BPA, making it ideal for drinking glasses. Borosilicate glass is used in all modern laboratory glassware because of its chemical and thermal tolerance, as well as its strong optical clarity. This Borosilicate glass is also used in a variety of applications, including the manufacture of microelectromechanical systems in semiconductor industries, the preparation of measuring equipment with screen printed markings for graduated measurements, the formulation of astronomical reflecting telescopes and the production of high-quality beverage glassware.

However, high cost of manufacturing for borosilicate glass and consumer acceptability towards cheap possible options may hamper the market growth of borosilicate glass. In spite of that, development of new products with less cost and high tendency can offer more opportunities for the further growth of the global borosilicate glass market.

COVID-19 Impact:

During Covid-19 pandemic, the cautious measures taken by governments across the globe resulted in the temporary suspension of organizations including the suspension of borosilicate glass production, as well as industries that use borosilicate glass for product formation, which has shown a negative impact on market growth. However, it has increased the demand for borosilicate glass in laboratories, health care labs and electronics due to the increased testing for Covid-19.

Key Trends:

Increasing Demand of Borosilicate Glass in Healthcare and Laboratories is One of the Major Factors Driving the Market Growth

The major factor driving the growth of global borosilicate glass market is increasing demand of borosilicate glass in healthcare and laboratories. As the factors such as non- toxicity, rigidity, strong nature, long-lasting and heat resistance form are supplementing the use of borosilicate glass in pharmaceutical industries. For instance; According to International Committee for Museums and Collections of Glass, the chemically resistant glass containers for pharmaceutical use vials, ampoules, syringes, cartridges obtained by converting neutral borosilicate glass tubes i.e. 300,000 tons in 2019 in rapid growth of 10-20 % per year. This is particularly important in world’s quest in the delivery of a vaccine to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, the market is also growing due to the rising expansion of various industries and the use of borosilicate glass. Borosilicate glass has a wide application in variety of products from mobile to Biomaterials, microscope lenses and microscope slides for studying tiny cells, telescopes, biomaterials and many others. Furthermore, rapidly growing use of borosilicate glass in vaccine vials & other similar laboratory equipment is also fostering the market growth.

Geographical Assessment:

The geographical terrain of this market consists of the following regions-

  • North America
  • Middle East & Africa
  • Europe
  • Asia Pacific
  • Latin America

Expounding the ongoing regional trends of this market

Asia Pacific- Asia Pacific is expected to witness the fastest growth in the global borosilicate glass market within the forecast period owing to the presence of large number of manufacturers and increasing demand from various industrial sectors in this region. For instance, according to Journal of Asian Glass, China's total glass fiber production in 2019 was 5.27 million tons, up 13% year on year, with a commodity yield of 4.5 million tons, up 3.5 percent year on year. Up to 20% of Chinese glass fiber and related goods are exported as a result of increased globalization of the industry. Also, China's vial makers will greatly expand production capacity with tight vial supplies in some countries that are threatening the delivery of coronavirus vaccines. Thus, according to The China Vaccine Industry Association the China's annual production of vaccine vials can reach at least about 8 billion, enough to meet the need for novel coronavirus vaccines. Many vendors are planning to develop the borosilicate glass vials.

Europe- Europe is expected to show a significant growth in the global borosilicate glass market owing to the expansion of industries and increased use of glass. For instance, according to Journal of Sectoral Manual-Glass Sector, the proportion of value-added goods in Europe is the largest. One of the key reasons for the glass industry's growth is that it offers a very appealing packaging choice. Glass accounts for 34% of the overall beverage packaging market in Europe, the world's largest manufacturer of container glass (bottles, jars, and so on), with an annual growth rate of 4.2 percent.

Middle East & Africa- This region is projected to capture a substantial volume share. This is attributable to the booming healthcare sector, widespread industrialization, shifting inclination towards the adoption of solar energy based devices, rising household appliance consumption, along with rapid population expansion.

Major Developments:

On March 30th, 2021; Schott, a global specialty glass pioneer and pharmaceutical packaging provider, has shipped more than 1 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines vials made of borosilicate glasses. It is also on target to produce more than 2 billion vaccine doses in vials by 2021. The vials were distributed to projects all over the world, with an emphasis on the United States, Europe, and Asia. Schott vials are used in approximately 90% of licensed vaccines. Schott is a leading manufacturer of pharmaceutical containers made of borosilicate glass, the most reliable and commonly used material for storing and transporting vaccines and other sensitive medications. Five sites dedicated to producing type-1 borosilicate glass tubes and another 16 plants transforming the tubes into vials are included in the company's global manufacturing footprint. The company increased its local tubing production capacity by 20,000 tons in a year due to increased demand for high-quality glass packaging items. It equates to more than 3 billion vials of glass. Despite the difficulties, the India plant has worked at full capacity while serving global clients and a rising workforce, all while adhering to strict safety guidelines. The company's multi-year commitment to the COVID-19 response, a $1 billion global investment in pharmaceutical glass and packaging facilities announced in early 2019 in response to increasing global demand for safer drug packaging, is a key factor in the response's success. Despite the pandemic, all expansion plans are still on schedule.
