Food safety testing is an important component of the food safety ecosystem because it ensures that food is safe to consume. It refers set of procedures for preparing, handling and storing of food meant to prevent foodborne illness and injury. The Majority of foodborne diseases are caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemical contaminants. Food may become contaminated at any stage of production and distribution. So, the food safety testing has become a major concern for the food manufacturing industry. Food safety testing laboratories and food industries perform food safety tests on a regular basis to ensure that the products they make are safe to eat. Food testing laboratories check various factors like adulterants, pesticide residues, and chemical contaminants are toxic metals such as mercury or lead, chemical preservatives, industrial chemicals, etc. There are various techniques and technologies that are helping to check whether food is safe or hazardous. Food safety testing like food allergen testing, GMO testing, PCR food testing, microbiological tests are conducted to test food safety. Food safety hazards like biological, chemical, physical and allergic are identified by food safety testing laboratories by various techniques and technologies.
Covid-19 has shown a significant impact on the food safety testing market growth owing to the increased need for food safety testing in this situation. However, the inadequacy of food control infrastructure may limit food safety testing market growth due to COVID-19 regulations.

News: FSA is Evaluating the Use of Remote Audits by Local Authorities for Regulating Food Companies.
On April 6th, 2021; Food Standards Agency (FSA) advised local authorities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic that remote assessment could be used in some cases to decide which areas to target during a subsequent onsite visit, and in other cases to notify the need for an onsite visit to identify and resolve possible public health risks. Remote audits are the audits conducted by using electronic methods such as video conferencing, email and telephone to obtain audit evidence. Remote audits are conducted in England, Walves and Northern Ireland for food hygiene and food standards checks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Remote assessments made more structured conversation with food businesses for e.g. use of questionnaires over phone without onsite distractions. Remote assessments were judged to be more appropriate in lower risk businesses as there was less public health risk associated with failing to identify food hazards. The results of assessments are currently being considered by the FSA. This will help to make decisions on any further testing or trials want to undertake to see whether remote methods can be used more often in the future.
The major factor driving the growth of global food safety testing market is the increasing health awareness and concerns about food safety, as well as the rapidly increasing international food trade. In addition, growing technical advancements in areas like rapid testing and new research technologies like PCR, Biosensors, chromatography, and other similar technologies are also supplementing the market growth. The food safety testing industry has risen at a rapid rate as a result of outbreaks and contamination like salmonella, E. coli, listeria, and many others. According to WHO, that every year contaminated food causes 600 million cases of foodborne disease and 420000 deaths around the world. Children under the age of 5 account for 30% of all foodborne deaths. Each year, the World Health Organization estimates that 33 million years of healthy life are wasted due to consuming unhealthy food, and this figure is possibly underestimated. For these reasons, the number of food tastings is increasing as the WHO raises awareness of food safety among the citizens as well as announces the new Strict Food Act. However, the rising numbers of individuals staying home and rising cases of Covid-19 patients have increased the need for healthy and safe food.
However, the lack of the food control infrastructure to support the market and complexity in technology may hamper the market growth. In spite of that, developments and innovations in the field of food safety testing methods may offer various opportunities for the further growth of the market.
On the basis of region, the global food safety testing market is segmented into North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific Latin America and Middle East & Africa. Europe is expected to dominate the global food safety testing market within the forecast period owing to the supportive policies to regulate and implement complete food safety for the public. European countries have recorded many issues related to food safety for the past few years. There have been a variety of different food crises in recent years that have been linked to fraudulent activity that may or may not reflect a genuine food safety risk. Chronic exposure to chemical contamination in Europe has required robust coordinated policy responses from the commission. According to WHO European Region, In Europe, every year more than 23 million people fall ill from eating contaminated food resulting in 5000 deaths and more than 400000 disability-adjusted life years. So, the WHO is working with states and partners to prevent and management of food safety risks minimizing foodborne disease. According to ECDC and EFSA (European Food Safety Authority), the rising number of listeriosis and campylobacteriosis, which is also known as Zoonotic Disease occurrence causing deaths in Europe. The highest occurrence was detected in chicken meat (37.4%) and turkey meat the oldest group, particularly those over 85 is the most affected group. The Listeriosis fatality rate is 24% in Europe, the infection was fatal for one in every 10 patients.
North America is projected to witness a significant growth in the global food safety testing. Rapid growth in technology and advances in food safety science, changing consumption pattern and outbreaks of foodborne illnesses in this region. According to North American rules and regulations, every food business has food safety certification. For instance, according to the Journal of Sustainability, only 0.7% of producers, 12.5% of supermarkets and 42.8% of restaurants have some type of food safety certifications. Hence, the strict the food safety regulations in North America can increase the opportunities for food safety testing market.
